Will Go-Kart Racing Ever Rule The World?

Will_Toronto_GO_Karting_Rule_the_World | Go Karts Toronto | Toronto Go Kart Blog | www.Gokarttoronto.com

If you have ever been go kart racing in Toronto, then you will already know how much fun it is to fly along the straight sections and hit a perfect corner to make your best lap time! Nothing beats it.

The first go-kart was built in California by a man named Art Ingles. I wonder if he knew just how popular the sport would be today?

Since the dawn and early development of the go-kart during the 1950s and 60s, this exciting sport really has come a long way. The go-karts are faster, safer, and cleaner now. The tracks offer more thrills for racers. The go-karting establishments, both competitive and recreational, offer an accessible and entertaining pastime for thousands of people, from all walks of life.

Go-Karting Is Still Gaining Popularity

One thing is for sure… Toronto go kart racing is still gaining popularity. There are now over 150,000 karters of all ages in the U.S. You could call it a revolution, and you wouldn’t be wrong! Maybe go-karting will take over the world one day.

Accessibility

There are many reasons for this rise in popularity. The first is the accessibility of the sport. Children as young as 8 years old can be trained and licensed for competitive go-kart racing. Many classes accommodate youngsters, and in terms of recreation, well, here at GPK in Toronto we even have junior karts for kids!

The fact that children can enjoy go karting in Toronto, whether recreationally or competitively, increases the number of families who choose to take a day out at the races.

More ladies are currently joining the revolution too, with go-kart tracks seeing a rise in the number of female guests and hen parties. The combination of adrenaline packed fun, and laid-back party atmosphere, makes go-karting an awesome alternative to a pointless night out at the bars again.

Toronto Go Karting Reaches Celebrity Status!

NASCAR is now one of the most popular sports in America. It is not the same as go-karting, but this general buzz around high-speed, adrenaline filled action is definitely contagious.

As more people start to watch the stock car racing, more people also want to feel the speed and hands-on fun for themselves. Go-karting is the most accessible racing sport, and fun for the whole family.

It is even possible for young karters to reach formula-1 racing status, directly from go-karting. Red Bull sponsor national tryouts for 13-17 year olds, and thousands of drivers participate every year.

In fact, quite a lot of celebrity formula-1 drivers started in go-karting. Ever heard of Kimi Raikkonen, Michael Shumacher, and the legendary Lewis Hamilton? All of them started their career go-karting. This has helped to popularize the sport.

Due to the rising popularity of Toronto go kart racing, helped along by influences from stars like Lewis Hamilton, the highly accessible form of racing has caught the eyes of venture capitalists, who have continued to invest and expand their empires of race tracks.

For example, Connections Capital from the UK invested £9 million to buy-out TeamSport Racing, and have opened several new circuits since.

Go-Karting Can Rule Your World!
In all fairness, go-karting already does rule the world. It is popular on nearly every continent, and one of the most accessible forms of racing available. Toronto Go kart racing can most definitely rule your world, that’s for sure!

No matter what age you are, what the occasion is, or what your experience level may be, you can enjoy an adrenaline packed day of adventure go-kart racing. Head on down to GPK in Toronto, and experience the magic for yourself!

5 Misconceptions About Toronto Go Karts

Even something as simple as the humble Toronto go karts can have a whole host of misconceptions surrounding it. We just want to clear the air about some of these.

Go Karts Toronto | Rental and Racing Go Karts are the Same | Toronto Go Kart Blog

1. Rental go-karts and racing Toronto go karts are the same thing

This misconception can go a couple of different ways. If you’re a parent who has seen a professional racing go-karts speeding around the track, you may think all go-karts are these powerful little machines that whip around corners at neck snapping speeds.

Or, if you are a go-kart racer and you tell someone that you’re a go-kart racer, you may get angry if they assume you just put-put around the track at a relatively low speed like the carts at many rental places.

But, the two types of go-karts are vastly different. Racing go-karts are direct descendents of open-wheeled Formula 1 cars and, as such, they can get up to pretty good speeds and require skill and practice to handle.

On the other hand, rental go-karts, while they go quickly enough to have a lot of fun, don’t come anywhere near the speeds the racing Toronto go karts can reach. Rental go-karts, like the ones at GPK, are meant for family fun and you don’t need any special training or skills to rip around the track on one.

But, if you spent an hour in one of our karts and then hopped into a real racing go-kart, you would notice a world of difference.

Check out our video on Toronto Go Karting Safety

2. Go-karts aren’t safe

Again, this depends on the type of go kart you are talking about. The racing go-karts, while they go fast, are equipped with all the safety equipment that a racing vehicle should have.

On the other hand, a backyard go-kart that some girl threw together using an old lawnmower engine and some discarded bike frames welded together will be decidedly less safe.

At GPK, our electric Toronto go karts are equipped with 4-point seat belts that keep you securely in the vehicle. Our padded steering wheels prevent injuries to the chest and head and all racers are mandated to wear helmets. On top of that, our indoor go-karting facility is equipped with a remote shut-off ability to slow down and shut off all engines in case of accidents or bottlenecking on the track.

So, while not all go-karts are created equally, we can definitely vouch for the ones at GPK. They’re as safe as a life jacket wrapped in a bulletproof vest strapped into a safety harness that is decorated with reflectors.

3. You can build a go-kart easily just using junk in your garage

Those backyard go-karts that we alluded to before do exist. Tinkerers like to see what they can build and how well their creations run. This goes back not just to people’s curiosity and love of building, but more specifically to the days of the old soap box derby racers (which are still around, actually).

While modern soapbox derby racers are sleek and you can purchase kits to help you build them out of materials like fibreglass, old-timey soapbox derby racers were built out of crates and whatever else a kid could toss together. Hence, people still believe that about motorized go-karts. A lawnmower engine, some wheels off a baby carriage, some wood, metal and wire and you’re good to go, right?

But, as any backyard engineer will tell you, there are many variables to consider, particularly weight. Just slapping things together will likely not get you going far, but with a little planning and some calculations and the right material, you can build a homemade go-kart that will run and even stay together.

Junks-and-For-Kids | Go Karts Toronto | Toronto Go Kart Blog | www.gokarttoronto.com

4. Go-karting is just for kids

According to a scientific formula we just made up, it has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt that adults love ripping around a racetrack just as much (and sometimes even way more) than kids do.

Racing Toronto go karts makes an excellent date, team building activity or birthday bash (for a child or adult), so whether you’re just a greenhorn at this whole life thing or you’re a seasoned veteran, you’ll have a blast on a go-kart track. In fact, at Maple Knoll Village retirement home, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a 91 year old resident became the oldest person to go indoor go-karting, according to the Maple Knoll website.

5. Go-karts and buggies are the same thing

While most people know that go-karts are made for driving around tracks on asphalt, there are still some people who equate go-karts with off road buggies (dune buggies and other off-road vehicles). These off-road vehicles have much larger tires and larger engines for driving on trails or over dunes. And while some go-karts, providing they have the appropriate tires, can be driven on trails, they are really designed for track use.

We hope that clears up any lingering misconceptions you may have about go-karts and go-karting. To fully appreciate these magnificent machines, come down to Toronto’s best indoor go kart track at GPK and do a few laps.

Go Kart in Toronto | Before getting on the Track, Do These?

First of all, you have to figure out which race track has the best facilities, and that’s where Grand Prix Kartways can help you.

GPK go kart in Toronto is electric-powered which keeps GPK racetrack clean and safe, and unlike gas-powered karts, there are no fumes and very little noise. GPK also has a remote-controlled shut-off which is capable of stopping all karts at once for on-track protection from pile-ups.

Our Formula One style indoor road course is designed to give you fun and authentic racing experience. With its numerous hairpin turns, chicanes, short medium and long turns, as well as the longest indoor high speed straightaway at 600 feet, surely, we are making your dreams of racing come true!

After figuring out which racetrack to race in, you have to know the rules and restrictions of that racetrack.

At GPK we have age and height minimums to ensure that racers can properly reach and operate the gas and brake pedals of our go-karts. For adults 16 years and above, we require that they are at least 32 centimeters, and for junior karts, your kid must be 122 centimeters in height and 10 years of age.

Go Kart Toronto

We also require our customers to wear our top-of-the line helmets, which meet all the safety standards of professional race associations. If you have long hair, it should be tied up above your shoulder and any loose clothing is secured.

At GPK, we don’t allow bumping, blocking or cutting off other drivers; and we have a zero-tolerance policy on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. All these are mentioned in the pre-race orientation that is required to all beginners and new racers.

When you are familiar with all that, then it’s off to the races, as they say.

When you get to GPK, the first step you make is to register at one of the computerized kiosks to get a driver’s VIP pass or a spectator ticket. Then you go to either the spectator gallery or you will suit up to drive one of GPK’s state-of-the-art electric go kart in Toronto. After your cross the finish line, you will be presented with a comprehensive diagnostic printout of the race results, earning your bragging rights when you get home.

You are now ready to race. Come on over at GPK and have a fun and authentic racing adventure!
